What is it like being a student at TOPS?
Here's what some of our students (and parents) have to say...
"We can work in our own home, and every teacher and principal/staff have been absolutely wonderful, caring and seem to be more loving and understanding, they care in such a way that’s remarkable." ~ (parent)
"Our experience with online school began in 2020, when choosing our local public school's virtual option meant keeping our son safe from the global pandemic. He had a wonderful teacher that year and thrived with the flexibility of Zoom classes. Our local elementary school didn't offer a virtual option the following year, so we decided to enroll him in a different online public school. While he continued to do well in his classes, the school itself was very unstructured, had quite a bit of staff turnover, and didn't give the students a chance to talk to and learn from each other." When he barely squeaked by the TCAP third-grade retention cutoff despite being a straight-A student, we knew we needed to make a change. From his very first week at TOPS, we could see a huge difference. The teachers are so much more engaged with the students, and he's actually able to interact with his classmates like he would in an in-person school setting. Plus, his TCAP scores absolutely skyrocketed! Meanwhile, his little sister thrived in TOPS kindergarten, where she learned to read, write, type, and answer math problems well above her grade level. I've spent most of my career working in education technology, so I have a little more experience than most when it comes to evaluating learning resources, and I've been very impressed with the classroom management and e-learning apps TOPS uses —they're user-friendly enough that our kids can navigate them on their own, and they provide developmentally appropriate, engaging activities to reinforce the concepts kids are learning during their classes." (parent)
"We could not be happier with our decision to enroll our kids in TOPS, and we'd recommend it to any family in Tennessee who values a public school education in a nontraditional setting!" (parent)
"TOPS is a way to escape the normal every day routine of waking up early and having to catch a bus, or get ready to go to a brick and mortar school and go from class to class lugging around all sorts of things like books, notebooks, pencils, etc... TOPS is the place where students are able to still get a great education all while in the comfort of your own home, being able to do school work on your own time and still being able to do all sorts of other things with your down time. TOPS is the place to be if you are looking for a great education, new friends, and a safe environment to work in without having the worries of everyday school drama, people drama and all sorts of other complications that most brick and mortar school students go through each and every day." (parent)
"To me, TOPS gives opportunities to do more that we love, whether it be hobbies or the volunteering. It's chance to find who we are and who we want to be without criticism from bullies. TOPS is making us the best that we can be." (student)
"TOPS gave me a chance to break away from the "normal" teenage experience of brick and mortar high schools, and through that I have met new people and great friends. TOPS has helped me learn you don't have to be just like everyone else, you can be unique and NOT get made fun of for it (like in brick and mortar schooling). We can be ourselves and still meet people just like us through TOPS. Most of the teachers in TOPS make sure you know they have your absolute best interest in mind, they truly want us to learn and succeed. I appreciate everything TOPS does for their students to enjoy our high school experience and achieve our goals." (student)
